TEST YOUR MIGHT! The arcade smash Mortal Kombat jumped kicked its way onto every console imaginable, including the Game Gear. Significantly watered down to fit on Sega’s handheld, the game still retained a lot of what made it so fun, but a lot was definitely lost in translation.
The fighting game craze of the early ’90s was huge, and not all the games made it overseas on all consoles. Before Genesis gamers had the chance to be disappointed by the plodding and frustrating gameplay of Heavy Nova, Micronet unleashed the game to Japanese Mega CD owners. As one would imagine, it was the same bad game embellished with a CD soundtrack, giving importers very little reason to trade up from their cartridge version. Heavy Nova is bad, no matter on what format it appears.
Karate tournament simulations aren’t meant to be games one can just jump kick right into. Instead, the player is expected to learn the ins and outs of competition and improve with time. Some titles. like Budokan, do this reasonably well. Others, namely Best of the Best, are TKOed in the first round due to repetitive and uninspired gameplay.
Primal Rage capitalized on the digitized, gory brawlers that were popular in the ’90s. It’s got a decent premise and lots of blood, and the gameplay appealed to a decent amount of fighting fans. That being said, was it really necessary to release a 32X version? Did the extra hardware make a difference?
