Speedball (Master System)

The Bitmap Bros. are renowned for their excellent games, titles that are both well-presented and that play great. Speedball on the Genesis is a great example of that, but the Master System port, done by Mirrorsoft/Image Works, doesn’t fare as well. Everything that made the Genesis version so good is missing, so there’s no reason to bother with this version.

Barkley Shut Up and Jam! 2

Accolade’s answer to the NBA Jam series was to give basketball star “Sir” Charles Barley his own series. The game was successful enough to spawn a sequel, but unfortunately, it doesn’t do much to push the “street b-ball” sub-genre forward. Perhaps its most remarkable feature is how it squeezes every ounce out of its undoubtedly expensive endorsement.

Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball

Baseball season may be over, but there are plenty of options for Genesis gamers to choose from so they can continue their quest for the pennant. ’90s baseball icon Frank Thomas lent his name to a title that was actually a pretty good version of the sport. Couch sluggers and managers should definitely give it a try.

TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament ’96

Sequels are supposed to improve on their predecessors, but sometimes developers decide to experiment. This can lead to changes that weren’t needed, and what could have been a great game becomes another example of lost potential. The TNN series fell victim to this, and instead of wrangling a prize catch, it goes home with an empty bucket.
