The Sega CD will forever be remembered for having the largest library of FMV games around, and there are a ton of different opinions regarding the overall playability of the genre. Regardless of how you feel about them, one thing we can probably all agree on is that some FMV games should maybe never have been attempted at all due to the gameplay constraints they placed on the concept they were trying so hard to bring to life.
If you were a Genesis-owning wrestling fan during the first two years or so of the console’s life, you most likely spent a lot of time in a bad mood. First, after being teased for months with Sega’s Wrestle War, you were quietly let down when the game never came stateside. Then, the only game even resembling a wrestling title was Renovation’s Beast Wrestler, which was in no way a substitute. Yeah, it’s that bad.
In this age of high definition, light gun games are increasingly rare (unless you count the Wii and its pointer controls). The Genesis may not have had a ton of them back in the day, but it did have some fun ones. A particularly successful light gun game was Konami’s Lethal Enforcers 2: Gunfighters. It’s limited due to the compromises made during the conversion to the home market, but it’s still a blast (ha!) to play. And it’s another reason to use your Justifier!
Rare games always create controversy, and fewer games of the 16-bit era are rarer than Uzu Keobukseon, known outside its native Korea as Space Turtle Ship. A shooter that conjures up images of Truxton and Twin Cobra, it’s one of those games that few people know about and even fewer have played. The question is: is it worth tracking down?
It’s nice to see that people are finally beginning to appreciate just how good the Genesis library is, and many franchises are being revived or ported to modern consoles.
