Clockwork Knight

The Saturn debuted with few titles, among them the 2.5D platformer Clockwork Knight. While it had some impressive effects, it didn’t really do much to bring the genre into the “next generation” of hardware. It’s not a bad game, but it’s not exceptional either.

Congo Bongo (SG-1000)

Congo Bongo is one of Sega’s underrated arcade titles, and it’s more than a mere Donkey Kong clone. Unfortunately, its charm and engaging gameplay didn’t make it into the SG-1000 conversion. What’s left is barely reminiscent of the coin-op, and it fails to offer any incentive for play over superior ports on other hardware of the era.

Ecco the Dolphin (MD)

You’ve undoubtedly played Ecco the Dolphin on the Genesis or European Mega Drive, but it’s worth giving the Japanese version a try. Released last, it added some features the others lacked, including a more fleshed-out story and a new stage. Together, these additions make the Japanese release the definitive cartridge version of the game.

Tanglewood

Big Evil Corporation makes a stellar debut on the Genesis with Tanglewood, an adorable platformer that was designed from the ground up with an original console development kit. Great presentation, rock-solid gameplay, and a lovable character make this a game Genesis owners need to snap up for their libraries.
